Apprenticeships - Growing through experience

Growing up, you are typically presented with two paths once education is over, work or university. Some people are eager to start earning, while others begin planning their transition into university. But what about apprenticeships? Why are they so often overlooked, rarely discussed in schools and not presented as an equal alternative? Looking back on my own experience, I was never made aware of the benefits or how becoming an apprentice could provide me with the experience, qualifications or insights that it has.

Stepping into work

I started my apprenticeship in Multi-Channel Marketing 10 months ago, a young 22-year-old, unsure where my life was headed, scared of failure and lacking experience in the adult working world. I had no idea what to expect and nothing but a media studies qualification from three years ago to support me. I had never worked in an office before, so the experience came as a shock – the early mornings, the concentration levels required for tasks, meetings, calls and the number of cups of coffee and tea that were to be drunk throughout the day! I was constantly being introduced to new things, digital software I had never heard of, projects Filigree was running, my individual everyday responsibilities and so on. It was clear I was going to be challenged every day, but it only made me want to work harder to feel more at ease.

Overcoming challenges

Beginning as an apprentice in a workplace surrounded by people more experienced than you can be very intimidating. It's easy to doubt yourself when you are the only one starting from the bottom, I personally struggled with this, but my colleagues accepted me instantly and made me feel like part of the team and equal to everyone else. This is all part of the apprenticeship, you start at the bottom, learn everything from scratch and become smarter and more confident every day. With constant support, encouragement and the opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, tasks that once felt unachievable gradually become easier. As your skills develop, you’ll notice a change not only in your work but also in your personal growth.

Personal development

Apprenticeships not only provide you with qualifications and experience in your chosen field but also shape you as a person. They make you more confident, teach you how to be professional and allow you to be independent. In my case, it was more than just a career move—it was a complete lifestyle transformation. When I started, I had few interests outside of work and little motivation, I lacked direction and often found myself wasting time on my phone. But 10 months down the line, I feel like a completely different person—more mature, driven although slightly more tired! Instead of spending my free time aimlessly scrolling, I now choose to read, go to the gym and spend my time more productively. Being surrounded by people who are also in this mindset entirely influenced me in the best possible way. Looking back, I can see how much my apprenticeship has changed me and will continue to benefit me as I continue.

Reflecting on my time as an apprentice, I feel incredibly grateful for the experience and proud of how much I’ve achieved—both professionally and personally. With 9 months left, I’m eager to keep learning, face new challenges and gain the skills needed to confidently step into my job role.
