Award-winning community involvement with local businesses and residents

Appointed by Lewisham Council, Filigree leads the communications and community engagement for the multi-million-pound regeneration of Catford town centre. Our work secured two awards - Best Community-Led Placemaking Project at 2020 Planning Awards and Best Community Engagement in the Planning Process at London First’s Building London Planning Awards 2020.

We created Team Catford, as a more community-focused profile to encourage a more honest expression of views from the local community who had ‘heard it all before’.

Since 2017, we have used our digital channels to gather over 3,000 comments from the local community on how they feel about the area. Through a highly visual approach we created #CatfordConversation and #CatfordandProud as part of a coordinated content strategy to drive online traffic to our websites and social channels.

We facilitate monthly conversation sessions with the local community, issue quarterly newsletters to 18,000 households, send fortnightly email updates to thousands of subscribers, coordinate media relations, social media and refresh the websites.

From feedback collected digitally and face-to-face, we produced a comprehensive report using content analysis to prioritise themes for the Council’s project team and architects to develop a vision for the regeneration of the town centre to 2040.

We were keen to ensure that our communications and marketing resonated with the diverse community, and when we found via Commonplace analytics that we were not reaching seldom heard groups, we pivoted our engagement strategy.

We identified that we needed to reach more young people, specifically Black, Asian and Ethnic Minorities – which account for 46% of Catford’s population. Our corrective actions included founding Young and Vocal – a DJ night aimed at young people and Catford Chronicle – an online magazine exploring the difference between regeneration and gentrification with Catford’s diverse community through video and portraits.

We continue to support Catford Food Market – a monthly market featuring local traders – with content and promotion as well as the pop-up, online shop House of Catford, which is stocked with locally-sourced products and Catford merchandise and sees all its profits distributed to two local charities.
